LISIDA lighting: LG Chem drops prices while Acuity adds amber fixture at LFI

LightFair International (LFI) will surely see news made in the LED panel lighting wholesale space and LG Chem and Acuity made OLED-centric announcements prior to the open of the exhibition. LG Chem said that it will cut prices to 33% of current levels for panels sold to OEM fixture makers. Meanwhile, Acuity expanded what is already the broadest OLED luminaire line in the industry with the amber OLED Marker Light Series of products.
Market stimulus
LG Chem hopes to spur activity in the OLED lighting market with its announcement of impending price cuts. The company said that panels have been selling to OEMs for $600/klm (dollars per kilo lumen) or above. The pre-LFI announcement indicated that LG will target $200/klm price levels going forward.
OLED lighting: LG Chem drops prices while Acuity adds amber fixture at LFI
"As a pioneer of OLED light panels, LG Chem decided to propose attractive prices to selective partners who are willing to stimulate the market with mass-production of OLED luminaires," said Sung-Soo Park, vice president and leader of the OLED Light Division at LG Chem. He said that the new price will be discussed with customers starting at LFI.
While the price cut is surely significant, the maturation of OLED technology still trails many projections including price predictions made by the US Department of Energy (DOE) meant to define levels that would lead to broad deployment. As we covered in an OLED feature article in 2012, the DOE had expected prices to hit $25/klm by 2015 and that goal seems unreachable at this point.
The issue remains manufacturing cost as we covered in the previously linked feature and in an update published early in 2014. Still, it's advancements in manufacturing that will enable the price reduction at LG Chem. The company said that it has altered the glass substrate and the encapsulation materials used in its panels. The result will be thinner and lighter panels with no loss in performance.
LG will initially apply the new technology to 100×100- and 320×110-mm panels that are the most popular products in its portfolio. Later the company will apply the new manufacturing techniques more broadly.
LG had shown larger 320×320-mm panels for the first time at the Light+Building (L+B) trade fair back in April. Watch our website for our June issue due shortly that has an L+B feature article. LG Chem has also moved to offer CRI of 9 across its portfolio.
Acuity and OLEDWorks
Acuity Lighting, meanwhile, has been the most arduous pursuer of OLED technology for lighting at the fixture level and is also probably LG Chem's largest customer. But Acuity has turned to LED panel lighting fixture as the supplier of panels for the new OLED Marker Light Series.
Acuity's newest OLED designs generate directional light and are meant as a directional beacon in high-traffic areas. Specifically, Acuity is targeting healthcare facilities with the new product line.
The OLED fixtures will deliver soothing glare-free light while also offering energy efficiency in what is often a 24-hour-day operating scenario. The fixtures output 590-nm amber light with a luminance of 600 cd/m2.
The choice of amber light was made specific to the target application. "OLED amber lights uniquely provide low glare, naturally diffuse light, and are free of blue wavelengths that disrupt circadian rhythms, making these products specifically well-suited for the needs of the healthcare market," said David DeJoy, co-founder, chairman and CEO of OLEDWorks.

Solid-state lighting brings out the true colors of modern healthcare

Color has been found to affect brain activity and hormone production, and to influence a person’s mood and emotions. led high bay light price can be evidenced by physiological responses such as changes in blood pressure or the heartbeat. For instance, the color red can result in raised blood pressure and a quickened pulse, whereas blue typically has a calming effect.
As early as 1976, Rikard Kuller demonstrated that color and visual patterning affect both the brain's cortex and the body’s nervous system.1 Kuller determined that alpha brain wave activity is altered in reaction to the energy produced by the light carrying color. Then in 1996, Frank H. Mahnke published Color Environment & Human Response2, exploring the effects of color, both emotional and biological responses. Later experiments conducted by Lois Swirnhoff using highly saturated colors in room lighting found that blue calmed the senses of the subjects, but the effects of red light were inconclusive.3
The creation of lighting effects, largely enabled by LED lighting, is now used by the medical profession to inspire human alertness or create a more calming environment for patients. The brain’s hypothalamus reacts to color, producing different effects as the wavelength and energy of each color varies.
Core change
As LEDs have made colored lighting more accessible and controllable, many healthcare and medical centers are modifying light distribution, color, or the correlated color temperature (CCT) of white light (from cool to warm) to help patients while improving lighting and energy efficiency.
Gregg Ryberg, director of sales, healthcare, Cree, believes that the move away from a clinical to a welcoming environment is positive. “The healthcare industry is amidst one of the greatest core changes in the last 25 years,” he said, “shifting away from a clinical view to more of a hospitality view. As a result, improving patient satisfaction and wellbeing, while controlling costs, is critical for today’s healthcare providers, with lighting playing a tremendous role.”
He cited how quality of light is essential to create spaces that address clinical and emotional needs. For example, proper lighting distribution can be comforting for patients, while clean, crisp light is needed to help staff perform duties, assess wounds, and diagnose efficiently. “Soft, low-glare lighting can help foster a restful treatment and recovery environment, with a calm, soothing atmosphere for patients and families,” he said. “Less stressed, more comfortable patients tend to have better outcomes and spend less time in the healthcare facility.”
Technology drive
Another trend Ryberg identified is that the acquisition of the latest technology leads to adopting lighting that enhances the ambience of its setting.
One example is the CT (computerized tomography) scanner room at the Princess Alexandra Hospital, Harlow, UK. Superintendent radiographer Suzanne Browne explained the reason for introducing the Philips AmbiScene lighting system at the same time as commissioning a new CT scanner. “Experience shows that medical procedures such as CT scans can make some patients, and particularly children, feel quite anxious. The colored lighting effects in the room help create a more comforting atmosphere… We have found that it helps reduce anxiety levels.” If the patient is calm and still during the scan, then the procedure is more likely to succeed. “Since using the new scanner with the new dynamic lighting effects, we have been able to increase the number of successful scans from 25 to about 38 per day,” said Browne.
AmbiScene can be used in retail environments, mixing lamps, luminaires, and LEDs to direct shoppers to parts of a store, but in healthcare it is used to create a comforting environment. The lighting can be changed in color, intensity, or tone by staff using a simple touchpad control system in the observation room (Fig. 1). Variable, colored lighting can meet the needs of a particular situation or be altered at a patient’s request. (Color choice is not universal; some personal associations may mean that a patient is more soothed by purple, for example, than blue.)
FIG. 1. Philips AmbiScene Lighting can create dedicated lighting features as well as a comforting environment.
FIG. 1. Philips AmbiScene Lighting can create dedicated lighting features as well as a comforting environment.
In the project at the Princess Alexandra Hospital, yellow is the most popular color choice among patients and staff. The association with warm, sunny days may be an obvious one, but staff also report that they are able to see veins more clearly during examinations in this light.
AmbiScene lighting was also used in the MR (magnetic resonance) scanner room at the Marien Hospital in Hamburg, Germany as part of its renovation, with variable lighting to relax patients before treatment and with color as a communication system. For example, patients who may be hard of hearing, or for whom German is not their first language, can be asked to hold their breath when a particular light signal is given.
Adaptation
In many cases, it is not a large investment in equipment but upgrades that can lead to lighting projects. Ryberg identifies the difficulty with early linear LED retrofits in that they were not viable options for mass conversion, particularly for replacing the fluorescent tube lighting in healthcare. Much of the market delivered features that were compromised, he said, as well as products with safety concerns or slow payback. Ryberg explained, however, “upgrading is no longer a challenge,” referring to Cree’s UR Series LED upgrade kit. It is faster to install than previously complex upgrade kits, he said, and allows existing lighting fixtures to remain. The modern kit also eliminates ceiling plenum exposure during the upgrade, so the room can function and maintain its sanitary levels.
In other areas of a hospital, the harsh fluorescent lighting has been replaced by LED lighting, in particular in neonatal units and in wards where patients suffer dementia. For the infant units, led high bay light for sale can be dimmed in a range of colors or CCTs for a soothing, less stressful environment. Lighting over a cot can be made brighter when needed to allow staff to examine the baby or analyze data on monitor screens.
In the UK’s Bradford Royal Infirmary, The Kings Fund installed a mix of fluorescent- and LED-based Philips Dynamic Lighting into two wards that have been adapted to support patients with cognitive problems and dementia. Using the fluorescent light, staff is able to adapt the lighting to mimic the natural rhythm of daylight (CCT around 5700K) in the wards. It has been found that more time spent in daylight — or daylight-like artificial light — improves a patient’s visual performance, their level of comfort, mood, sleeping and waking patterns, concentration levels, and alertness. Philips LuxSpace LED compact downlights are used in some patient areas with the same purpose — to modify white light from daylight to warm, evening levels (around 2700K). Bradford staff reported that the Dynamic Lighting led to a cheerful ambience that kept the patients active during the day and created more restful sleep patterns at night.
In other schemes, patients whose beds were next to a window were discharged more quickly, and Dynamic Lighting was used to mimic daylight in darker parts of the ward to aid restful, regular sleep patterns that contribute to recuperation.

Global lighting event highlights LEDs, tunable lighting, and controls

While Light+Building (L+B) eclipsed all other lighting events in scale, the massive exhibition didn’t magically reveal a neat path forward for the lighting industry in general, or the LED sources that are taking over the industry. Energy efficiency clearly remains important, but the quest for better led street light fixture Manufacturer and features such as tunable lighting continues. Moreover, the large L+B exhibit space revealed perhaps even more uncertainty in how best to control solid-state lighting (SSL) for optimum energy savings, convenience, and realization of applications such as human-centric lighting, which requires a dynamically tunable spectrum.
Human-centric lighting was a sufficiently significant trend at L+B that the LightingEurope organization presented a walking map of such demonstrations around the fairgrounds. Indeed, the organization is targeting the application with its SSL-erate initiative that was heavily promoted at the fair.
Here, however, let’s progress through some key technology and lighting exhibits at the fair that all are tied to the central themes of light quality, dynamic control, and efficiency. We’ll cover topics ranging from retrofit lamps to luminaires to light sources.
Retrofit lamps
We can’t seem to get away from the retrofit lamps space, because the technology is simply the first touch point for most people when it comes to LED lighting. But what was different at L+B was the focus on light quality and aesthetics in lamps. For example, Philips Lighting and Osram hosted eerily similar demonstrations of low-output A19 lamps with very elegant designs.
FIG. 1. Osram’s LED Superstar Classic A40 LED could virtually pass for an incandescent bulb in the on or off states.
FIG. 1. Osram’s LED Superstar Classic A40 LED could virtually pass for an incandescent bulb in the on or off states.
The Osram LED Superstar Classic A40 is a 40W-equivalent lamp that is designed to more closely mimic a clear incandescent lamp in both the on and off states (Fig. 1). Likewise, the Philips Master LED (also referred to as LED Clear Classic) looks very much like a filament lamp. Both designs appear to use a light guide that functions somewhat like a filament with the LEDs hidden in the base. Although the lamps do have a white plastic neck, it’s hard to envision an application for a clear incandescent lamp in which these led street lighting fixture wouldn’t serve admirably.
The other story in retrofit lamps was in more products with integrated wireless controls for on-off, dimming, and in some cases color selection. Philips perhaps led the way with more Hue products including both a white-only Hue Lux version and a new control product called Hue Tap. We covered those products in more detail in an earlier online story. And there were numerous other wireless lamps demonstrated based on ZigBee from the likes of Samsung, LG Electronics, Osram, and others.
But use of the ZigBee standard for wireless isn’t universal. Megaman, for example, announced its Ingenium Smart Lighting family at L+B. The family includes lamps with Bluetooth support for simple smartphone control (Ingenium Blu), and more complex systems that rely on a proprietary wireless scheme (Ingenium RF). The latter family includes lamps, wall panels, dimmer modules, and a Wi-Fi bridge with support for as many as 288 lamps on one network.
The diversity of network options will remain a challenge for the industry until some movement is made toward at least de facto standardization. But that may not happen soon and companies such as Osram are preparing for a multi-network environment.
Indeed, a highlight of the Osram exhibit was the new Lightify product concept. The tablet-like controller can be used to set light levels and control color spectrum. Osram said the product is due on the market this fall. But the more interesting angle is that the company will support ZigBee, Wi-Fi, DALI (digital addressable lighting interface), and perhaps other lighting networks or interconnects.

Outdoor lighting: DOE funds more SSL, MaxLite post-top LEDs, Cree and projects

The US Department of Energy (DOE) will enable led street light wholesale in five metropolitan areas under the new High-Performance Outdoor Lighting Accelerator program announced by President Obama. In outdoor products, Cree has combined a customized LED and unique optics in an area-lighting fixture while MaxLite has announced new solid-state lighting (SSL) retrofit kits for post-top fixtures. Moving to projects, Cambridge, MA and Honolulu, HI have announced major street-light upgrade plans with the former having already begun deployment.
DOE outdoor accelerator
Back in May, US President Obama made a sweeping announcement of energy-oriented initiatives meant to decrease energy usage, create US jobs, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The programs included new commitments to solar and $2B (billion) in new investments in energy efficiency projects. As Jim Brodrick, lighting program manager at the DOE, pointed out in one of his recurring Postings emails, the new High-Performance Outdoor Lighting Accelerator portion of Obama's program will lead to the retrofit of 500,000 legacy street lights with LED fixtures.
Related article: Outdoor Lighting: Acuity supplies FDOT project; efficiency questions in projects
Brodrick specifically mentioned Detroit, MI, a city with ongoing economic issues and an inventory of street lights that are more than 20 years old on average. The new program will enable an upgrade in Detroit that will include network and control technology that is expected to save the city $1.5 million per year.
Detroit is one of five US cities that will be a part of the accelerator program. The others include Huntington Beach, CA; Little Rock, AR; West Palm Beach, FL; and the greater Kansas City, MO metro area. Under the DOE's counsel, the cities will utilize the specifications developed by the agency's Municipal Solid-State Street Lighting Consortium (MSSLC) for both luminaires and controls to guide the purchase process.
New outdoor products
Moving to the outdoor lighting product space, there are a couple of items worth noting. Just before LightFair, we covered the new Cree OSQ luminaire that the company said would greatly decrease the price of SSL area lighting retrofits. We saw that product firsthand at LFI and learned more about the new optic technology integrated in the luminaire.
Cree OSQ LED luminaire
The version of NanoOptic technology in the OSQ is based on a lens that's molded into a metal carrier that can accommodate six such lenses and of course the LEDs are positioned underneath the lenses. The optic does have unique reflective and refractive properties. But the optical performance is enhanced by custom LEDs from the Cree component side that have primary optics designed to deliver an asymmetrical beam pattern. The result is a match with the most popular beam patterns used in area lighting.
Related article: Outdoor Lighting: Cree supplies LEDs to Baytown; 'Street Fight'; San Francisco
The Cree Edge series still offers a broader selection of beam patterns due to the flexibility of the smaller led street light supplier and individual total internal reflection (TIR) optics used in the Edge product. But the OSQ will be a more cost-effective choice if the application at hand can be served by the available beam patterns. Evidently Cree will not offer the LEDs used in the OSQ family as part of its commercial component product line because the LEDs and optics are designed specifically to work together.
In the post-top luminaire area, meanwhile, MaxLite has added to its retrofit LED light engine product line designed for installation into existing acorn, globe, and bollard fixtures. The new 12W and 20W models are offered in 3000K and 5000K CCT models.
MaxLite LED post-top retrofit lamps
"Our LED Post Top Retrofit Lamps are the perfect solution for replacing existing inefficient and lesser quality outdoor light sources," said Alex Truong, MaxLite product marketing manager. "This LED lamp provides a broad range of opportunities in the exterior lighting market and will deliver substantial savings on energy and maintenance in public spaces for urban planners, DOTs and landscape architects."
Cambridge and Oahu projects
In the SSL project space, we have news of new LED fixture installations in Cambridge, MA and Honolulu, HA. The Cambridge Chronicle reported that the city public works department had begun the upgrade of 4800 cobrahead fixtures with new LED fixtures. The project is scheduled for completion in August.
The project is projected to cost $6M (million) but will cut energy consumption by 50%. Cambridge will also install a network and controls to both monitor performance and automate maintenance, and to enable dimming for additional energy savings.
Related article: Outdoor Lighting: London makes LED street light plans; US and UK projects
On the island of Oahu, the Honolulu mayor has announced plans to replace the more than 50,000 light inventory with LED street lights, according to Hawaii News Now. Honolulu has already installed LED lights on some freeways, but in the next 18 months will tackle the broader problem of upgrading all types of roadways. The motivation is both efficiency and a safer environment for the many pedestrians on the island.

Phoenix begins comprehensive LED street-light retrofit with GE Lighting

GE Lighting has announced an LED street light project with the city of Phoenix, AZ that will include conversion of 700 high-pressure sodium (HPS) lights to LEDs this year. The city is projecting 60% energy savings from the retrofit and plans to convert all 95,000 legacy fixtures in the city by 2020.
Phoenix begins comprehensive cree xsp series led street light with GE Lighting
Ironically, the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) Street and Area Lighting Conference (SALC) was held at a Phoenix resort in September 2013. At the conference opening, speakers from the city of Phoenix admitted that the city had yet to begin installing LED street lights, although the city had lit the short roadway to the resort entrance that hosted the event with LEDs just prior to the conference.
Indeed, Phoenix went through an unusually long test and evaluation period before choosing a street-light retrofit course of action. "We reviewed more than two dozen fixtures and conducted controlled testing for nearly four years to examine characteristics such as lighting patterns, overspill, and uplighting," said Jason Fernandez, principal engineer technician with the Phoenix Street Transportation Department.
The city worked with the Arizona Public Services (APS) utility on the project. APS led the field test portion of the project including installation and evaluation of five GE Evolve luminaires including ERS1 and ERS2 models. The city was especially concerned about the harsh operating environment and the fact that temperature extremes range to 105°F.
The evaluation led to GE being selected to supply fixtures for the broader project. "GE's Evolve LED street lighting is our new standard and will be installed anywhere a fixture needs to be replaced or where new construction and capital improvements occur," Fernandez said. "Additionally, with the energy and cost savings we experience from each new fixture, we're putting that money toward our investment for more LED street lights."
Specifically, the city is installing the GE Evolve LED Roadway Scalable Cobrahead fixtures. The scalable design is achieved via the number of led street lighting Manufacturer engines used to populate a fixture and results in the same basic design being applicable to a wide variety of roadway types. Oakland, CA recently announced plans to use the scalable family as well.
Phoenix is planning to convert 700 fixtures this year wth the upgrade already underway. That initial phase will deliver $57,000 annually in energy savings and $41,000 annually in maintenance savings. The city projects 11 years of maintenance-free usage based on 12-hour days and the 50,000-hour expected lifetime.
Ultimately, Phoenix plans to install LED lighting along 4800 miles of roadway by 2020. The project will encompass 95,000 LED fixtures.

Intematix Lighting-Quality LEDs Set New Price-Performance Benchmark

Intematix Corp., A leading innovator in phosphors, LED components and solid state lighting solutions, today announced the introduction of its C1109D that sets a new value benchmark for lighting-quality LEDs. Ranging from 450 lumens at 143 lumens per dollar in cool white, to 345 lumens at 110 lumens per dollar in high color quality warm white, the ceramic-packaged LED is nominally rated at just 4.7 watts. A typical incandescent bulb would require 25 to 30 watts for an equivalent light output. The C1109D is suited for a wide array of luminaires, especially those demanding maximum operational cost-efficiency, such as street and roadway lighting, garages, gas station canopy, warehouse, and recessed downlights in restaurant, hospitality and other high usage applications.
"Breaking through 1-cent per lumen for a high color quality, warm white LED is precisely what the LED panel lighting wholesale industry needs in order to encourage more rapid adoption of this energy saving technology"
. "Breaking through 1-cent per lumen for a high color quality, warm white LED is precisely what the LED lighting industry needs in order to encourage more rapid adoption of this energy saving technology," commented Ilkan Cokgor, Director of Business Development, Lighting Products, for Intematix. "While the business case for LED lighting in many 24x7 applications can be fairly clear, luminaire manufacturers are still struggling to show a short enough payback for the more common 12x7 applications, as you find on our roadways, in our parking lots and outdoor service environments, and in many downlight applications. With the LED offerings that have been available up to now, in order to make the business-case work, luminaire manufacturers are often forced to consider potentially less capable LEDs that may not deliver a consistent and high quality color over the long term. A quality LED panel lighting fixture, at a breakthrough price point, is the solution. "As with other Intematix patented chip-array-on-ceramic LEDs, the C1109D leverages Intematix 'widely recognized patent-backed phosphors, with special production techniques, to deliver impressive color quality and highly controlled bin selections. At 4.7 watts, C1109D series delivers 95 lumens per watt (lm / W) from the 5000K correlated color temperature (CCT) cool white version. The 3000K CCT warm white version is a high color rendering implementation (CRI> 80) well suited to general purpose lighting. At 9mm x 11mm, the package is compact enough for use in integral replacement lamps, such as R or PAR type bulbs, as well as other types of downlights and recessed fixtures. The C1109D has several advanced design wins in luminaires that have received Energy Star certification.

New Possibilities for OLED Based on a Single-Molecule LED

Research by Gaël Reecht, Fabrice Scheurer, Virginie Speisser and et al from University of Strasbourg, France luminescence can be achieved by a single polymer molecule, which could be the smallest possible cree xsp series led street light device, according to Physic Review article. Below is the synopsis for the report on Physical Review Letters by Don Monroe:

"Transforming electrical current into light is critical for technologies such as telecommunications and displays. In Physical Review Letters, researchers report luminescence from a single polymer molecule, representing the smallest possible OLED device.

To electrically connect to an individual polymer molecule, Gaël Reecht of the University of Strasbourg, France, and his colleagues used a gold-coated scanning tunneling microscope tip to identify and then grab one end of a single polythiophene molecule lying on a gold substrate. When they pulled back the tip and applied a voltage, they measured a nanoampere-scale electrical current running between the tip and substrate through the polymer, which was held at just a few kelvins. As long as the voltage was large enough, the energy spectrum of the emitted light didn't change, leading the researchers to conclude the light emerges when electrons jump between intrinsic energy levels of the polymer, not those of the metal electrodes.

Still, led street lighting Manufacturer emission was strongly enhanced by the sloshing it generated in nearby electrons in the gold tip and surface. When the tip had a large negative voltage, a photon emerged for every 100,000 electrons that entered the molecule from the tip. But with the opposite polarity, the team suggests that the molecule's stronger electrical connection to the substrate keeps the relevant molecular level too high in energy to be populated from that side. The observed 10,000-fold asymmetry is reminiscent of that in commercial OLED devices, but on a vastly smaller scale. "

Use of LED’s in Endoscopy and Laparoscopy

It was 1950 when Mr. Hopkins met Dr. Hugh Gainsborough, a gatroentreroligst at St. George's Hospital London, where he was put forth with a challenge of illumination while operating within abdomen. By 1954, Hopkins invented flexible glass rods which transmitted led high bay light price from external light source to the inspecting tissue residing within the body of patient, which came to be known as rod lens system. Concurrently early 1950 saw the birth of fibre optic light transmitting system which revolutionized the field of communication.

The current perspective of medical imaging can be distinguished primarily into two techniques.First is interpreting information retrospectively, for example: radiology images, capsule endoscopy and pathology While second is recording the real time data, for example:. Flexible endoscopy, Laparoscopy, Ultrasonography, Ophthalmology and Gynaecology.

The present standard light source for most of MIS is Xenon based arc lamp, which emits a broad range of spectrum across the visible range which is very close to that of day light. Xenon lamps are high powered and highly inefficient as it requires round about 300W of electrical power to delivery just about 1W of optical power. The need of illumination is one of the major prerequisite in endoscopy, because if lux level on the inspected area is lower than threshold, the image captured may get distorted and hence resulting in erroneous result .

Alternate source include laser based phosphor fibres and supercontinuum lasers, but these works in niche area and generally for a narrow illumination area such as a focused area of cancer or tumours surgery (which require high lux levels within a small coverage of area). While LED's which have many advantages are slowly being introduced in the field of medical imagining, mainly because of its miniature size and flexibility in its arrangement. The arc based lamps also needs to be replaced every 500 hours, while LEDs work for 50,000 hours. Electronic circuitry of LED that is the driver's life takes utmost importance. LED's can produce 1,00,000 lux of illumination on operation theatre table.

The present lighting solution which deals with use of arc based lamps has ergonomic challenges, lower efficiency and inability to create variety of colour (such as violet colour which is required to spot a particular disease, as discussed later). In this regard the new generation of lighting solution is delivered by compact, inexpensive and durable High Brightness Light Emitting Diode (LED) which are having better ergonomic viability.

The work by Neil Clancy et al. Combines the use of four ultraband LEDs namely red, green, blue and violet spectral regions. A light pipe multiplexer combines these four different lights, which are having a lambertian intensity profile and couples it into a single light cable yielding a manually configurable white light at the other end. The coupling process is the key to this technology, as it may lead to high amount of loss, if coupling doesn't happen in a proper manner. When used with a white balanced camera , though the output of the light source of LED (0.61W) is less as compared to Xenon (1.5W), but LED's have the advantage of adjusting to relative intensities which enables contrast enhancement required for different kinds of biological tissue imaging.

The crux of above led high bay light for sale was that one can have a while light of varying colour temperature and can be adjusted to the illumination standard that of daylight or xenon lamps. By setting up the spectrum to blue-green region (10 and 30 nm wide respectively) , the contrast of the images of tissue is increased by using light that has penetrated superficially into tissue (with depth of less than 200 μm3) and strongly absorbed by blood. The fluorescence imaging of protoporphyrins (which is used as a carrier molecule for divalent cations ) is made possible for photodynamic diagnosis in case of bladder cancer detection by using the violet LED.

Whereas the light from LED based systems was found to be more uniform at the distance of 4cm, as stated by Alex C. et al. As compared to the arc based lamps, the shadows were also sharper (16 vs. 44 pixels), the overall mean image intensity was higher (127 vs. 100 arbitrary units) despite of lower radiometric power. The illumination was found to be more stable and less flickering (0.02% vs. 5%).

A non invasive technology known as capsule endoscopy incubates a camera and LED within (as shown in the Fig. 4 & 5). The patient in this procedure needs to swallow a capsule, while the camera captures images as it travels along the gastrointestinal tract. The main use of capsule endoscopy is to inspect the upper alimentary track including small intestine which cannot be visualized by other endoscopy methods. It uses Bluetooth to transfer the live stream of captured images to a monitoring system. The challenge foreseen for this technology is the retention of the capsule inside the patient's body. Fig 6 showcases the intestinal image acquired by the moving capsule endoscope (as explained at a later stage) while moving through the gastrointestinal tract to the intestine.

Fig 4: Image of capsule endoscope Fig 5: Endoscopic capsule end-on, showing six LEDs and camera lens Fig 6:. Image of intestine acquired by capsule technology
The future of LED based endoscopy seems to be bright, but yet serious research efforts needs to be focused on how the light coupling is improved between reflected light from inspecting tissue and CCD of the camera, electrical to light power conversion efficiency, miniaturizing the endoscope and optimization of illumination.

Gallium Nitride makes LED Lamps more Compact

LEDs do have one weakness, though - they are extremely sensitive to variations and spikes in power To function properly, they need a driver that ensures a constant supply of power at all times This driver, which takes the alternating current from the grid and.. converts it into direct current with a reduced voltage, has a profound influence on the light yield and lifetime of the led high bay lighting wholesale as a whole. The demands placed on the driver electronics are correspondingly high. This has prompted researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Solid State Physics IAF in Freiburg to focus their attention on voltage transformers featuring gallium nitride (GaN) transistors. During practical testing, the scientists found that the drivers developed using this new semiconductor material were extremely robust. Components made of GaN can operate at higher currents, voltages and temperatures than standard silicon transistors. "Heat plays a role both in the brightness and the service life of LED lamps," says Dr. Michael Kunzer, group manager at Fraunhofer IAF.
Gallium nitride transistors switch at high speedGallium nitride transistors can also switch at high frequencies. The switching speed has a significant impact on the size of the coils and condensers built into the drivers for energy storage. In a GaN-based driver, the switch speed can be made as much as a factor of 10 faster than that of its silicon equivalent. "Applied to a smaller surface, this means it is possible to make switching cheaper. The whole LED lamp can be made lighter and more compact while delivering the same or even improved illumination," explains Kunzer. Since the energy storage component plays a decisive role in manufacturing costs, this could have an extremely positive effect on the end price. Thanks to the new semiconductor material's useful properties, Kunzer and his team have been able to boost the efficiency of the GaN driver to 86 percent - between one and four percentage points better than its silicon equivalent When compared with the silicon transistor led high bay light supplier available on. the market, the scientists were able to increase the light output:. while the luminous flux of commercial LED retrofit lamps featuring silicon components is around 1000 lumen (the unit used to measure the light produced), researchers from the IAF have been successful in increasing this to 2090 lumen. "20 percent of energy consumption worldwide can be attributed to lighting, so it's an area where savings are particularly worthwhile. One shouldn't underestimate the role played by the efficiency of LED drivers, as this is key to saving energy . In principle, the higher the light yield and efficiency, the lower energy consumption is. If you think that by 2020 LEDs will have carved out a market share of almost 90 percent, then it is obvious that they play a significant role in protecting our environment, "says Kunzer. The researchers will be showcasing a demonstrator of their retrofit LED from April 7-11 at the Hannover Messe, where they can be found at the joint Fraunhofer booth in Hall 2, Booth D18.

The Advantages of Parking Lot Lighting

There are a number of advantages within parking lot lighting than you might have initially thought. These can come in the form of design, professionalism, and security. Just as installing lighting will have advantages in the safety of pedestrians, it can also include advances in design, professional status and attraction of a business. Have a look at the following pro's of parking lot lighting, and why it is something you should consider.

Protecting Your Business

Installing parking lot lighting protects your business in terms of the security and safety of your business's assets. If led street lighting Manufacturer has an unlit parking lot, then it's more likely to attract unwanted attention from thieves and burglars who are looking to stay out of sight before potentially performing a break in.

If a building becomes attractive to the wrong kind of audience, expensive computers and other equipment are at stake, and there is no guarantee, despite security systems, that robbery will not be attempted during the late hours of the night.

While it is advisable to install security systems or cameras alongside parking lot lighting to ensure the highest level of security and prevention of risks, parking lot lighting is a factor that will help towards lowering the risk of criminal activities.

Protecting Pedestrians

Installing lighting into a parking lot also improves the safety of on goers and pedestrians. While a dark parking lot can be a perfect lurking spot for criminals and thieves, a well lit up area creates a safer environment for passers-by and local pedestrians.

Parking led street lights price also creates a safer environment for employees who might be working late or leaving their car in the parking lot. It gets dark early in winter and fall, which means staff who might be walking to their car on their way home are far more likely to get robbed than if the area was completely illuminated.

It is also a safety precaution in terms of driving in the pitch black darkness, as pulling out of a parking space is a lot harder in this case. To prevent any unnecessary accidents, installing parking lot lighting can help.

Design

The instalments of lights in a parking lot can not only improve the safety and security of the area and your business's assets, but it can also create a better sense of environment and design. Lighting will illuminate the parking lot as well as the building where the business is present, making it stand out and look more presentable.

Professionalism

Installing parking lot lighting gives the building and business a higher professional status, making it appear well kitted out and ready for any clients who might come to visit.

Business's who don't have parking lot lighting installed will appear less practical than those who do, and clients visiting for meetings will be safer if the area is lit.

Overall, parking lot lighting might seem like an extra mile to go, but in fact, the extra mile you go will heighten the level of safety, security, design and professionalism a business already possesses.

Philips Lumileds: LED Manufacturers Should Look beyond Lumens per Dollar

Low price has-been the key to success in the outdoor LED Street Light 200w as market penetration rates rises. However, manufacturers will need to look into different avenues to keep ahead of the pack as price competition intensifies. Ray Chock, Philips Lumileds Mr. Director of Marketing and Business Development shared his insight on where the industry is heading in regards to the lumen per dollar trend During LEDforum at Guangzhou International Lighting Exhibition 2014 on June 11 in China.

Ray Chock, Philips Lumileds Mr. Director of Marketing and Business Development LEDforum attending at Guangzhou International Lighting Exhibition. (LEDinside)

LED bulb prices have dropped over the past few years in an effort to boost consumer acceptance. When LEDs started to show up on retail shelves, They Carried a hefty price tag of about U.S. $ 40 or more. With the availability of super cheap incandescent bulbs, Consumers Were not ready to accept more expensive LED bulbs.

However, as the years went by, LED bulb prices dropped much lower. Philips bulb smooth design released in 2013 for example had a retail price of less than $ 10, well within consumer's price range. Bulb prices Have the opportunity to reach U.S. $ 2.50 in the near future Which will make them highly competitive energy efficient CFL With Their Counterparts. However, manufacturers have put too much focus on cost and less in other areas including quality and performance.

Look beyond lumens per dollar

"It is not all down to LED cost," Explained Chock. "A lot of people think acerca lumens per dollar. However, we just did a lot of analysis That Says That matters more than high cost performance. High performance is able to reduce the LED count. "

"This stock as many LEDs To Have They can be smaller or Which Allows you to reduce the size of the heat sink," added Chock. "Most heat sinks are made out of aluminum raw materials Which is to increase increasing That is in cost. LEDs are only 20 to 25 percent of the total material of a bulb, so it is becoming less of a factor in the overall cost of luminaires. So When You look at things like that, the system Becomes more important than just the LED Street Light 200w price itself. "

With so many low priced LED bulbs available on the market, Consumers will be looking for something more than just price When Selecting products. Low priced LED light bulbs That have poor quality and performance will not be able to compete with slightly more expensive bulbs that offer higher Consumers light lumens per watt and quality. THEREFORE, manufacturers need to look past slashing costs to keep a competitive edge That Prevents them from being eliminated.

Intematix Releases High CRI Phosphor Powder in Face of Industry Patent Wars

What can manufacturers do When phosphor powder prices plunge? Should These manufacturers lead others follow and slash prices to keep market shares, or Should they stand on the sidelines as spectators? How can manufacturers change Their market strategies?
"If you are a lighting manufacturer, you will always worry acerca patent Infringements one day," said Alex Lee, General Manager, China, Intematix. "Purchasing Intematix's phosphor powder is a safety guarantee."led street lights price are being used as a protective shield in the industry. Luckily, Intematix has a collection of patents, que can be handy arsenal During patent wars. According To Intematix's official figures, the manufacturer has more than 160 patents including 100 Authorized U.S. patents globally. Up to 30 percent of the company's employees are R & D staff, who continue to Develop new products and make new patent applications.
"The only way to avoid infringing Intematix's patented solutions is to buy our phosphor powder," said Yi-Qun Li, the company's Vice President and Chief Technology Officer. Li made the remarks LED phosphor During a forum on June 10, 2014 at Guangzhou International Lighting Exhibition in Guangzhou, China. To back his point, the Li Compared chemical components of patented phosphor Between different international manufacturers.
The company is fully responsible Also for the products sold, and willing to guarantee legal Provide That the products do not infringe other patents, Li Noted. Clients using "GAL + XR" will have even better patent protection. "Most Importantly, if clients are sued products (for patent infringement), Intematix will pay for lawyer fees and compensation."
LED: The importance of patents can not be Emphasized enough. Everlight and Nichia's patent wars are still raging on. Earlier, five international manufacturers Nichia, Osram, Cree, Philips and Toyoda Gosei interchanged patent rights for blue LED chips and phosphor powder YAG white. The LEDs above five companies will still dominate the heavily patent protected U.S. and European markets. Seoul Semiconductor, Epistar and Bridgelux Exchanged all have blue LED chips with one of the five major international companies,: such as Cree, Nichia, or Philips. Nichia has limited YAG white LED patents related to industries including Sharp and Citizen.
Over the past few years, Most flat panel lighting wars patents have Involved white light. Most YAG white light LEDs outside of the Chinese market face huge Risks. Intematix's advantage lies in patent guarantee and phosphor powder, Li Noted. The company has made many assisting Contributions LED package manufacturers to avoid Nichia's patents.
In 2004, Intematix phosphor silicate series developed and successfully applied for powder content and application patents. The company Also Helped Taiwanese LED package manufacturers YAG bypass patents in the Following year. By 2006, Samsung Recognized silicate phosphor powder Could Nichia's patent and avoid Widely be used in backlight products. The Chinese company Also Helped solve decorative luminaire manufacturers package export issues.
In more recent years, Intematix's Gal (Luag) series provided a solution for high CRI LED lighting applications in 2010. Samsung, Sharp, LG, Everlight and Unity Opto Were the first to accept the patent's value. The company's latest high CRI white phosphor powder released in 2014 is a guaranteed white LED patent.
Worth Noting, Chinese manufacturers have not made it as a global top 10 LED manufacturer. Chinese manufacturers exporting to the European, American and Japanese market outstretch to choose patent protected LED components.
Adding on top to Chinese manufacturers' awkward situation has-been plunging prices phosphor powder phosphor DESPITE growing volume of and demands. "North American clients are more willing to negotiate prices Because They respect patent rights, and Also Because Their products are sold at much higher prices," said Li. "They are more concerned That you purchase the products do not have patent issues and are safe to use ... but in the Chinese market, the industry does not care about patents, and will keep the prices low."
"It Might seem economic to buy cheap phosphor powder, but Might Also companies pay a very high price if patent infringement is Involved," said Li. "The defendant Might lose even more money in compensations."

China Government to Focus on Energy Efficient Industry Subsidies

To Achieve Carbon emission reduction goals, China will be turning its focus to Strengthening energy efficient and low carbon industries financial support and tax incentives, According to a recent report by Xinhua.com.

China has fallen behind schedule in meeting reduction goals coal, and will need to continue to work hard, said Xie Zhenhua, Vice President, National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) at a recent meeting.

LEDs Have Shown excellent energy efficiency. The Chinese government in cooperation with United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and Global Environment Fund have Facilitated the phase-out of incandescent bulbs China's project, the Phasing Out of Incandescent Lamps and Lights Energy Saving Promotion (PILESLAMP) project. From 2009 to 2013, incandescent bulbs phased out in the country Reached 650 million, approximately 16 percent of incandescent bulbs manufactured in the country. In the next phase of the project, solar powered led street lights will follow the incandescent bulb phase out roadmap and Intensify transition towards more efficient lighting, said Lv Fangxiang, Deputy Director of the PILESLAMP project.

Average CFL lifetimes are more than 6,000 hours, que That is six times of incandescent bulbs. CFL can keep 60 percent to 80 percent of electricity. Compared to CFL, LED lifetimes can be three times higher, and consume 60 percent of energy acerca. The project is expected to PILESLAMP Directly conserve four billion kilowatt per hour of electricity and cut 4.40 million metric tonnes of carbon dioxide, said Xie During the project's initiation ceremony. The project is expected to cut 175 million to 237 million emission coal Within 10 years.

In recent years, China is nearing Carbon reduction deadlines. The country Announced in 2011, a roadmap for the gradual phase out of incandescent bulbs. Import bans on incandescent bulbs 60W and above for General lighting will be starting Effective Oct. 1, 2014. The approaching midterm evaluation of the incandescent bulb phase out roadmap will speed up the replacement trend. Last year, China's lighting market value Reached RMB 260 billion (U.S. $ 41.4 billion), and CFL Accounted for 80 percent market share, said a high-ranking officer of a listed company LED. LEDs have high market potential, and is Projected to claim 20 percent to 30 percent market share by 2015.

"CFLs are not environmental friendly Because of its mercury contents With many (Chinese) Local Governments have CFL canceling subsidies," said the officer. "In the residential lighting market, led street light specifications have Realized Cost / Performance ratio and are environmental friendly. Manufacturers are now expecting the release of LED Timely subsidies. "

LED industry started to rebound in 2013, According to analysis by industry insiders. A couple of years ago, 5W LED Prices were three to four times That of CFLs With the same brightness. However, in recent years upstream LED chip prices have Declined at a rate of around 30 percent, and in overall costs have Declined. By 2013, LED luminaire prices are basically the same as CFL. The LED industry will be entering a phase of completely Replacing conventional luminaires.
