Ford has announced that the light-duty F-150 truck line will now have LED headlamps that are designed to last longer than headlamps based on legacy sources while also delivering superior reliability. Osram and automotive OEM Flex-N-Gate worked with Ford developing the headlamp unit that the three companies assert will deliver superior lighting on the road while using less energy.
led high bay light for sale have become commonplace on luxury autos, but the technology is just entering the mainstream market; Ford is the first to make LED lighting a factory-supplied feature on a truck The company said that the previously-used halogen and high-intensity discharge. (HID) headlamps could require replacement at 40,000-mile intervals, especially in harsh workplace environments. The company expects the LEDs headlamp unit to last five times longer.
"Stand on it," said Ford lighting specialist John Teodecki as indeed he did on top of the 11-pound F-150 headlamp unit. "This lens just will not break. We fire stones at it, expose it to extreme sun, soak it in saltwater, shoot rocks, rock salt and ice - this thing is very tough to crack ".
Ford and Osram have partnered to design an LED-based headlamp system for the F-150 light-duty trucks with the goal of both delivering a signature style and long life in what can be a harsh environment.
Perhaps more significantly, Ford says that the led high bay lighting wholesale design will outperform traditional headlamps optically. Ford's engineers took advantage of the small size of LED sources to create a unique design that relies on 16 precision surfaces and 80 facets on the lens to spread the light evenly on the roadway.
Teodecki said that the headlamps use 63% less energy than competitive designs based on legacy sources. The energy savings combined with the expected longevity convinced Ford to make the switch from the mainstream vehicle.
Still, there was a styling angle behind the choice. The headlamp unit features an LED-lit light guide that surrounds the perimeter of the design that Ford says will deliver signature styling. "It looks so cool," said Teodecki. "I'm telling you, this LED light tube is going to be the next big thing. Our new F-150 owners will be longing for dusk every day, just to show off their trucks in dramatic lighting. "

Lumileds delivers broader spectrum in CrispWhite COB LED
Philips Lumileds has formally announced the CrispWhite family of chip-on-board (COB) LEDs after displaying products that use the source at two recent trade fairs. The LED platform is designed specifically to replace ceramic-metal-halide (CMH) lamps in retail solid-state lighting (SSL) applications. Lumileds says the LED closely mimics the spectral power distribution of a CMH lamp and delivers the combination of vivid saturated color rendering and daylight-like whites.
Lumileds delivers broader spectrum in CrispWhite COB LED
Philips has alluded to the capabilities of the CrispWhite led high bay light for sale at both Light + Building and LightFair International (LFI), saying the COB delivered a mix of 3000K and 4000K CCT light for optimal color and white performance. Indeed, Philips and Amerlux demonstrated lighting products that integrated the LEDs at LFI. But the story behind the CrispWhite LEDs is a bit more complex than the company's LFI press release would indicate.
Brightening agents
Lumileds designed the COB LED to render whites crisply, especially in the presence of optical or fluorescent brightening agents (OBAs) that are regularly applied to white paper and fabrics. A recent feature article written by Soraa covered the color science behind such agents that make whites look crisp in daylight and under certain artificial lighting, including CMH sources. Soraa has touted the violet emitter used in its LEDs as capable of exciting the brightening elements and delivering the perfect white appearance of treated paper and fabrics.
Lumileds designed the COB LED to render whites crisply.
To excite OBA elements, Lumileds is mixing its standard blue-pump LED chips with what it calls some deep-blue chips in the CrispWhite COB products. If you look at the spectral power distribution of a typical LED, you will typically see an energy peak in the blue region that is attributable to the blue pump with the broader energy distribution at longer green, yellow, and red wavelengths attributable to phosphor. The CrispWhite LEDs have a second blue peak in the 410-nm region to deliver the short-wavelength light that makes OBA whites look best.
Lumileds claims that its approach is superior to the violet emitter used by Soraa for a couple of reasons. Eric Senders, global marketing director at Lumileds, said the violet emitter approach yields an efficacy penalty relative to the mix of standard- and deep-blue emitters used in CrispWhite. Moreover, he said there are photobiological safety issues with violet wavelengths that do not exist in the deep-blue region.
The efficacy advantage is clear in the specifications. The CrispWhite LEDs deliver 90 lm / W across a product family that spans from 9- to 19-mm light emitting surfaces (LES). Soraa does not regularly publish efficacy values for its LEDs but in the aforementioned articled pegged it at 80 lm / W.
White point target
Still, the CrispWhite platform differs from other typical high-CRI LEDs and legacy sources in more ways that are also significant, according to Lumileds, in the hospitality application. The white point of the LEDs is targeted via the phosphor formulation below the black-body curve. That is a trick that Luminus Devices demonstrated at LFI and that is detailed in the above link on LEDs at the exhibition.
Senders points out that the white point of the CrispWhite LEDs both matches the legacy performance of CMH lamps (Philips refers to them as CDM or ceramic discharge metal halide) and also lines up with consumer preference documented by the Lighting Research Center (LRC) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. We covered that research in an article on the 2012 Strategies in Light conference in which the LRC tested white point in a retail-like mock environment.
Lumileds also compared the CrispWhite LED with other high-CRI LEDs and light sources. The new led high bay light supplier delivers a CRI of 91 but only an R9 value for saturated reds of 55. The relatively-low R9 value may be in part the reason that the CrispWhite LEDs come in only 1-2% lower than Lumileds standard high-CRI COBs in efficacy. But Senders said the lower R9 value translates to the expected and desired performance in the retail application.
Senders said sources with a high R9 value in the 90 range can result in white or light colors that have a slight reddish to yellowish appearance. Typical CMH lamps used in retail have an R9 value in the range of 39, and have been the gold standard for the retail industry, according to Senders.
Lumileds is also only offering the LEDs within a three-step MacAdam ellipse in terms of color consistency. Many COB makers offer two-step bins. But Senders said the LRC research proves that for white points below the black-body curve, humans can 't perceive a three-step difference whereas such a difference is far more noticeable above the black-body curve.
The CrispWhite family is aligned precisely with Lumileds' existing COB LEDs in terms of LES, lumen output, and driver capabilities. Lamp or luminaire manufacturers will be able to use the same design with either a standard COB or one of the CrispWhite models. At typical drive current the maximum lumen package is 3750 lm, but Senders said you can overdrive the LEDs to reach 6000 lm at only a slight efficacy penalty. He said that performance level will allow the CrispWhite family as launched to supplant CMH sources up to the 100W level .

LED business news: Cree financials and troffer; Philips IP and financials
"Our strategy is working, the business is growing and we've made great initial progress building the Cree brand," said Chuck Swoboda, Cree chairman and CEO. "Fiscal Q2 was another strong quarter as revenue increased to a record $ 415 million driven by strong growth in LED fixtures and LED bulbs. For the first half of fiscal 2014, revenue is up 22% from the first half of fiscal 2013 and non-GAAP operating profit is up 38%. "
Cree announced the ZR Series SSL troffers
Swoboda's comments about Cree's success in LED-based lighting products are revealing. The company does not breakout the financials of its LED panel lighting wholesale and lighting businesses. But even if the company is growing market share in LEDs, it could not drive the profit margin and revenue growth apparent in the Q2 report based on a component space where prices are dropping. The company is clearly doing well with its retrofit lamps and luminaire offerings.
In the lighting space, Cree also announced the ZR Series SSL troffers for notably low pricing levels. Cree said that the products deliver payback in two years based on 12 hours of use per day and average electrical costs. The included 0-10V dimming can enable greater energy savings and even faster payback.
Cree calls the ZR Series contractor-grade products, whereas the earlier AR, CR, and LR series are meant for architectural specification. Still, the new products are part of Cree's TrueWhite branded line offering CRI greater than 90 and Cree covers the ZR Series with its ten-year warranty. See our more detailed article on our Illumination in Focus website for more details, and for details on a linear LED lighting lab prototype that delivers 200-lm / W efficacy.
The Philips license agreement with TCP International Holdings provides the latter with needed IP and settles a patent infringement suit that was pending in an Ohio court. "We are happy that an agreement could be reached with Philips," said Ellis Yan, TCP's CEO. "The patented technologies that Philips makes available through its licensing program are quite extensive and provide important features and value to the TCP products. "
"We continue to believe having such an open and accessible license program is greatly assisting in accelerating the adoption of LED panel lighting fixture technologies and products," said Arian Duijvestijn, general manager for lighting at Philips Intellectual Property & Standards. "And as a recognized producer of energy-efficient lighting products, we are particularly excited to have TCP join the Philips licensing program. "
Philips also announced financial results for Q4 of its 2013 fiscal year. Revenue was up 7% relative to the same quarter from 2012. But in Philips' case, the results cover far more than the LED and lighting sectors.
Philips did say that lighting delivered 8% revenue growth, enabled in part by what the company said was double-digit growth at the Lumileds LED business unit. Moreover, LED-based lighting sales grew by 48% and now represent 34% of Philips' overall lighting sales.

Amerlux will deliver Sensity Systems SSL network technology in outdoor luminaires
Sensity Systems and Amerlux have announced a partnership around Sensity's Light Sensory Network (LSN) technology and the Net Sense platform that includes an open application programming interface (API) that allows customization of feature sets in a lighting network. The LSN technology supports adaptive control in outdoor solid-state lighting (SSL) systems, along with cloud services and other features that can help justify the installation cost such as security-system functionality.
Amerlux had previously announced its own wireless networking technology called SmartSite that was intended both to enable control of outdoor lighting and to use the network for other applications such as delivery of advertising messaging via speakers on light poles or even video screens. Apparently the company will now use Sensity's network technology to accomplish the service delivery goals over the SmartSite network.
"As a result of partnering with Sensity, led high bay light for sale are opening up an entirely new area in lighting applications and services for our company that goes far beyond lighting controls by offering an array of third-party applications on our SmartSite LSN products that will include video- based security and public safety, parking management, predictive maintenance and more, "Chuck Campagna, president and CEO of Amerlux." These new offerings will provide us with a significant competitive advantage. "
Initially, Amerlux will focus on lighting-centric features in offering NetSense-enabled luminaires. cree xsp series led street light said its initial focus will be on "centralized lighting control, energy optimization scheduling, predictive maintenance and real-time fault notification, measurement and verification, analytics and reporting and demand response. "But the open API in the NetSense platform will enable development of additional services.
"Our open, standards-based, multiservice platform enables the industry's transformation from simple control technology to lighting with truly intelligent networking capabilities, cloud services, and partner ecosystems," said Hugh Martin, chairman and CEO of Sensity Systems.
Specifically, Sensity says that the platform will enable security systems that integrate with building security systems and extend the perimeter. Parking services for paid parking lot applications are a potential use. Moreover, the company said that the network could be used to monitor an area for CO2 emissions, seismic activity, pollutants, or UV radiation.

LED lighting emphasizes natural beauty in Museo del Duomo
Zumtobel Arcos Xpert LED spotlights have been deployed during the just completed two-year renovation of the Museo del Duomo - the Museum of the Cathedral located at the Milan Cathedral in Italy The UV- and IR-free lighting with a CRI of 94 highlights. the historic sculptures, paintings, and scale models of the cathedral with the oldest model dating to 1519.
The museum is located in the Palazzo Reale and now has been expanded to occupy 2200 m2 of space divided into 27 rooms and 13 themed areas. The renovation was intended to better present the historical works with glare-free light and in particular to prepare for the expected influx of visitors that will attend Expo 2015 that will run May through October next year.
Zumtobel supplied a variety of lighting products for the renovation including Panos Infinity downlights, Tecton row lighting, and Linaria fixtures in side rooms. But the Arcos fixtures are the primary luminaires that light the exhibits from above.

The Arcos products feature the ability to adjust color temperature on the fixture. Moreover, the products include optic accessories that can be added to control the beam. The lighting design was optimized to enhance the 3D appearance of works such as sculptures with care taken to avoid hard shadows.
The models of the cathedral are among the most cherished works housed at the museum. The oldest is a walk-in model made of wood built at a scale of 1:20 (shown). Others are made of plaster, bronze, and wood. The lighting on the models was intended to mix light and shadows in a manner that mimics natural daylight.

It's increasingly clear that LED lighting will become the best choice for museum projects. We recently covered a Philips Lighting LED project at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
Early on, museum exhibits directors had interest in led high bay light supplier based on the potential energy savings given that museum lighting systems burn for long hours, and the minimal maintenance requirements. Moreover, the IR- and UV-free properties of LEDs can minimize the damage to works of art attributable to lighting. Now, however, LED lighting has matured to the point that the broad choice of color temperature, higher CRI, and uniform spectral distribution can also improve upon legacy lighting in terms of optimizing the visitor experience.

LED business news: GE and CRS settle; Evolucia wins optics patent; more
GE Lighting. (NYSE: GE) has announced the settlement of a lawsuit that it filed in December 2012 against CRS Electronics over patent infringement in the area of LED lamp design Evolucia has won a new US patent for the Aimed Optics technology that it uses in solid-state lighting (SSL) products for outdoor applications Microcontroller specialist Microchip Technology. (NASDAQ: MCHP) has acquired analog and mixed-signal IC manufacturer Supertex. (NASDAQ: SUPX) including the latter's LED driver IC technology Lumex has launched new products in the TitanBrite high-voltage LED family.
GE Lighting and CRS Electronics
The GE and CRS lawsuit was waged over US Patents 6,799,864 and 6,787,999. Those patents were focused on led street light wholesale designs. Specifically, GE said that the patents cover lamp heat-sink designs and technologies critical to replacing legacy lamps with LED-based products. Terms of the settlement have been kept confidential, but CRS will now pay for a license to the patents in question.
"The 864 and 999 patents cover technology important to the long-life operation of LED-based lamps," said Steve Briggs, general manager of global product management for GE Lighting. "GE Lighting is offering non-exclusive licenses under the 864 and 999 patents to interested parties. We are pleased with this settlement, which demonstrates our commitment to defending GE Lighting's intellectual property across the globe. "
Evolucia patent award
Patent 8,635,049, "Light unit with light output pattern synthesized from multiple light sources," meanwhile, has been awarded to Evolucia and published on January 21, 2014. As the title implies, the Aimed Optics technology is used to form the desired beam in LED luminaires based on LED point sources for applications such as the various IES (Illuminating Engineering Society) defined roadway beam patterns.
Evolucia has claimed that its optics technology offers better efficiency than competing optical technologies from other companies. Most companies competing in the outdoor space use total internal reflection (TIR) lenses on each LED to form the beam pattern. Evolucia combines simpler optics and directional LED mounting in outdoor fixtures.
"We aim the LEDs exactly where we want the light to shine, which uses less energy to create more light - a key point recognized in the patent," said Evolucia CEO and Chairman Mel Interiano "In other words, the shortest distance between. two points is a straight line. Our patented Aimed Optics technology simply uses that principle to its fullest. We do not need to redirect the light path with optics, which creates inefficiencies. "
Microchip acquires Supertex
Microchip's acquisition of Supertex could impact a number of application areas, although SSL is certainly a prominent one. Microchip has offered limited support for LED-based lighting applications through its microcontroller (MCU) and analog IC portfolio, and the MCUs will be increasingly applicable as intelligence is integrated into more lamps and luminaire products.
"We are pleased to have Supertex become part of the Microchip team," said Steve Sanghi, president and CEO of Microchip Technology. "Supertex's deep domain knowledge in high-voltage analog and mixed-signal technologies, and strong position in the medical, industrial , and lighting markets, complement many of Microchip initiatives in these areas. We believe that combining Supertex's business with Microchip's analog business will enable significant synergies and cross-selling opportunities. "
Lumex high-voltage LEDs
In the LED component space, Lumex has added to its LED offering with the TitanBrite High-Voltage Low-Current LED. The product actually relies on 20 mid-power, phosphor-converted LEDs mounted on a small circuit board but functions like a high- voltage packaged LED.
High-voltage LEDs are increasingly popular because minimizing the voltage drop between the AC line and the DC input to the led street light supplier can result in a more efficient driver and higher system efficacy. Moreover, connecting multiple lower-power LEDs in series to create the high- voltage stack means that less current is required to generate the required flux output so the thermal management problem is minimized.
Lumex says that the high-voltage approach results in a 50% reduction in form factor based on the elimination of a larger heat sink, and 20% savings in system cost. The company added that the design delivers 45% more light output than a typical 10W high-power packaged LED. The downside is the long term reliability of some mid-power LEDs. We have an excellent feature article on the topic in our February issue of LEDs Magazine due out next week.

LEC supplies LED lighting for UNESCO-recognized Moroccan capital
LEC Lyon has announced an LED commercial lighting wholesale project in the historic city of Rabat, the Moroccan capital that was recognized as a world heritage site by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) in June 2012. Moroccan lighting specialist Electrimar handled the design that is based on a mix of warm-white and red solid-state lighting (SSL) products from LEC Lyon.
LED-based lighting is increasingly finding use in UNESCO sites in part because of concerns over light pollution and the need for low-energy usage in older structures with dated infrastructure. For example, we have covered the Schréder project at the Grand Place in Brussels.
Lighting of the walls of Rabat was undertaken along with restructuring of the Hassan II roadway that runs alongside the old-town area of the city. The walls protect the south and west sides of the city and were built in the late twelfth century. The walls stand 8m high and the 1.5-km lit section features architectural elements that the city chose to preserve and highlight with the dual-color project.
"The walls encircle the old city of Rabat, led indoor lighting wholesale that are enlighted today are the one that are the most visible," said Fouad Bahechar, president of Electrimar. "Every 30m, the turrets project over the street. We thought that this rhythm was interesting to explore; that's the reason why we chose to use two colors, warm white for continuity and red for relief ".
Challenges to the project included both the environment and developiing a system that delivered accurate and uniform light. The SSL products had to be shock-proof to handle traffic in the area and also to operate in temperature extremes. Moreover, the project required a provision allowing adjustment of the beams.
Bahechar chose LEC 5716-Allevard spotlights that are designed to be recessed in grade. He said, "LEC products are technical, sturdy, and tailor-made." The variations of the product family deployed integrate 6-7 LEDs to light the 8m height . Moreover, LEC delivered a custom lens to spread the white light over the walls and the red light on the turrets.
The specified fixtures can withstand impacts of 20 joules and are rated IP-68 for double protection against water ingress. Moreover, LEC designed the fixtures to be adjustable after installation. Indeed, the fixtures can be adjusted without the device being dismantled or the seal compromised .
LEC has been behind a number of European SSL projects where LED-based lighting was installed in a novel manner while preserving the historic look and feel of a site. For example, we covered a project in Nîmes, France that included pedestrian tunnel lighting and roadway lighting mounted in curbs.
