Is Your Office Lighting Ideal? GE Looks at 6 Factors Impacting Your Building—and Business

Office is a place where employees must feel alert and engaged to be at their best, but often overlooked is lighting-a simple factor influencing not only everyday operations but occupant comfort and the effectiveness with which tasks are completed. GE takes a closer look at six trends driving office lighting best practices today, from dimming down led high bay Manufacturer areas to saving watts in parking lots to setting a more productive mood. As decision makers will see, there are many opportunities to positively impact employee satisfaction and the profitability of their buildings-and businesses-through simple adjustments:

1. Overcome Over-lighting

The Illuminating Engineering Society of North America recommends a 30-50 foot-candle (fc) range for ambient (general) office lighting, yet most workspaces are lit to 60 fc on average. Over-lighting can mean unnecessary eye strain for occupants and higher energy costs for companies. Instead, a layered lighting design offers advantages. A study by the California Lighting Technology Center and the California Energy Commission PIER Program found that utilizing low energy-consumption, LED-based localized task lighting as the primary layer of light in offices resulted in a 50-percent savings in lighting energy usage and overwhelming user satisfaction-evidencing the extent to which a simple lighting design change can make a significant difference.

Most workspaces today are over-lit. To avoid this, it is best to layer different types of lighting in a workspace, such as ambient and task lighting.
2. Retrofit for ROI

Sometimes a simple re-lamping can be a straightforward path to savings. In thousands of office buildings across America, millions of legacy linear fluorescent lighting systems are costing companies uncalculated amounts of energy. What building managers might not realize is that reducing energy use just a few watts per fixture can add up to dramatic savings. For MetLife, a more efficient T8 lamp and ballast system will yield an annual $ 196,000 cost reduction at its St. Louis administrative center and less interruption to workflow from maintenance on old, energy-draining T12 fixtures.

3. Look Out for Savings

Property owners can also save like Jo-Ann Stores, the nation's largest fabric and craft retailer, which reduced lighting costs in its 777,000 sq. Ft. Headquarters parking lot by $ 28,000 a year with outdoor LED lighting fixtures from GE. Advances in LED lighting technology have ushered in a new generation of efficient systems utilizing innovative optics to better "aim" light where it's needed-meaning LED fixtures using 200 watts or less can effectively do the work of traditional 400 - and 1,000-watt high-intensity discharge (HID) systems.

4. Take Control

Building managers increasingly rely on smarter lighting control systems to help regulate the use of light. Occupancy sensors, for instance, make it easy to ensure lighting is only 'on' in active areas of a workspace, saving energy. The US General Services Administration recently evaluated the performance of occupant-responsive lighting technology in five federal buildings and realized an annual energy savings of 27 to 63 percent, varying by site. Today, many manufacturers are streamlining building operations as well by integrating their products and systems. This includes GE and Trane, who recently teamed to bring facility professionals a single platform for controlling lighting, heating and cooling that can eliminate the need to monitor multiple systems.

Lighting controls help building managers conserve energy in many ways, such as enabling automatic light level adjustments to changing daylight conditions and occupancy patterns.
Lighting controls help building managers conserve energy in many ways, such as enabling automatic light level adjustments to changing daylight conditions and occupancy patterns.

5. Give Control

Studies also show that occupants feel more satisfied when given individual control over lighting in their workspace. Allowing employees to adapt their surroundings to their personal preference may seem inconsequential, but it can go a long way to improving mood and inviting collaboration throughout the office. The New York Times Building in midtown Manhattan is a case study in the benefits of task lighting and its potential influence on worker productivity in a cutting-edge work environment.

6. Simplify Your Ceilings

An integrated lighting and ceiling system can distinguish a new building or bring sophistication to outdated office space. This approach adds visual interest to a room by creating channels of light that run the length of the ceiling-the result is an uncluttered, uninterrupted look that can be unlike anything clients or customers have seen before. Tomorrow's ceiling is here today thanks to manufacturers like USG and GE that are designing LED street lighting systems to work together.

Re-lamping with more efficient linear fluorescent lighting can be an easy path to annual energy savings.
Re-lamping with more efficient linear fluorescent lighting can be an easy path to annual energy savings.
An office lighting retrofit or redesign can offer a wide range of benefits in many cases, and it does not need to be complicated. Soliciting a professional lighting analysis is a first step to learning more about existing systems and options for improvement. This is also a good time to explore energy-efficient rebate programs that can accelerate your project payback period.

Interacting with light over observation – TNT Night Watching Tour in Taipei

Since 1999, the Transnational Tanteidan (TNT) has been traveling around the world to survey lighting conditions in different cities. This time, they traveled to Taiwan and had a short but impressive event with Taiwanese people. In this event, members of led high bay light for sale discussed with participants on their survey and went out to detect lighting conditions in five areas in Taipei City. That was a typhoon night, yet these detectives didn't be defeated by the wind and rain. They walked in the areas and observed carefully to find out heroes and villains - good lighting and bad lighting.

. The full English title of TNT is "Transnational Lighting Detectives" as "tanteidan" means "detectives" in Japanese On 1999, TNT started their first Tanteidan Night Watching Tour in Tokyo, Japan - an event that assigns specific areas to teams that constituted by five to nine participants (aka students) and searches for heroes and villains. The basic concept, as well as the central idea, is to designate good lighting in a city, and the detectives call good lighting a "hero" while bad lighting a "villain. "The event in Taipei also followed the same process. On early September, TNT's leader Kaoru Mende, Taiwanese member Uno Lai and the Taiwan sponsor Xue Xue Institute selected five areas in Taipei City from eastern to western part for five teams to do their survey. For the next three weeks, all the students have to detect the area they got assigned and try to search for good and bad lighting through their feeling and present their results.

In order to explain their projects, students were asked to create three panels - the first one was for explaining the area's surroundings, the second one was about their analysis (the heroes and villains they found) and the third one was their solutions to those bad lighting. On the previous presentation on 20th September, TNT members listened and gave suggestions to students' panels, explaining the most important concept of distinguishing good and bad lighting. "What important is how you feel," said a member of TNT. "We want to know what your criteria are. "After that, five teams went to detect their areas with their teachers respectively in the night.

That was a typhoon night, yet everyone was energetic and active. Students led their teachers (two to three teachers for each team) to visit the points they had found and expressed their opinions. After observing the situations, teachers provided their professional points of view and precise problems to solve During their tours, teachers would share their inspections on lighting designs they encountered along streets They felt, saw, perceived and exchanged opinions together;.. through such processes, students can understand what "lighting" is while teachers can grab some ideas about how laymen think. They worked together in the wind and rain, some looked up for more heroes or villains, some tried to sketched the streets and some took photos for presentation. It was evident that they came up with something innovative throughout the event.

21st September was the formal presentation day. Students had modified their panels according to teachers' suggestions and had managed to find out more solutions to the lighting problems. With help from TNT members, all those good presentations became even better and led every audience to reconsider . the lighting conditions in Taipei City After the teams finished their presentation, all TNT members had a short talk to the audiences They didn't only mention about their feelings to this Taipei event but also pointed out why they have the Night Watching Tour. - it's all about interactions.

Interaction between students and teachers, led high bay light price and the surroundings; they are all based on interaction between people and light As the TNT members said, the main criteria are actually HOW YOU FEEL - is the lighting comfortable or offending to you.? The central idea of TNT's events is to feel the light surrounding you and they believe that this is the only way to recreate a better lighting circumstance. "We all know that good or bad lighting can't be concluded by only one aspect," said a TNT member "So we need observation, discussion and argument on the light from various angles, and then, we can conclude what good lighting is." They also pointed out a cultural perspective of lighting:. light can benefit to the society and it is necessary to learn. "Feel the light!" emphasized by Mende, hence we can understand why the title "Lighting Detectives."

Luminous ceiling from Philips simulates daylight to comfort critically ill patients in Intensive Care

Royal Philips has developed a media enabled luminous ceiling to simulate energizing daylight to comfort critically ill patients. The led high bay light for sale based ceiling has been introduced into clinical use by the Charité Campus Virchow Clinic in Berlin as part of a unique stress-reducing concept called "Parametric Spatial Design ". Hospital staff can enter the desired parameters and the large, sky like area which creates visuals and light moods customized to the situation of individual patients, enabled by software from ART + COM. The Clinic has implemented the concept in two of its intensive care patient rooms to enhance the healing environment for patients who are severely ill.

Hospital staff can enter the desired parameters and the ceiling creates visuals and light moods customized to the situation of individual patients
Research shows that most people will at least once in their life be treated in an Intensive Care Unit. In many cases the patients' lives are at risk as they await an operation or start to recover after surgery. In this critical phase they often find their surroundings irritating and hostile. Clinical research has shown that factors like loud noise, inappropriate lighting conditions and social isolation can increase the risk of patients in intensive care.

Until now there has been very little data available about the health-related effects of hospital rooms with a controllable atmosphere. For this reason, intensive care physicians, psychologists and sleep researchers at the Charité Clinic in Berlin will continue to work together with its partners GRAFT architects and the ART + COM design studio to use the integrated spatial concept for research over the coming twelve months. The Parametric Spatial Design concept was developed by GRAFT architects, the ART + COM design agency and the Charité Clinic in Berlin in a joint venture and funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economy and Technology (AiF). Meanwhile, this program has been supported by Philips' expertise in lighting design and technology.

"We find that particularly in critical areas such as the intensive care department, lighting design is becoming increasingly important in the patient environment," explains Roger Karner, Managing Director of Philips Lighting DACH. "Together with our partners we can provide healthcare establishments like the Charité Clinic with turnkey lighting solutions that are tailored precisely to the specific needs of their patients, "adds Karner.

The luminous ceiling concept from Philips combines the natural, dynamic rhythm of daylight and the effects of gentle colorful light and visual content. It incorporates 15,400 LEDs and extends from the ceiling onto the wall in front of the patient's bed, and therefore fills their field of view completely.

In addition to the RGB (color) LEDs, high-performance led high bay light supplier with a warm-white and cold-white color temperature have also been integrated into the ceiling. They are able to produce light output that is comparable with the light from a clear sky in summer. It is this high level of light output that brings the biological effect of light into the intensive care room. It supports the patient's natural day / night rhythm and helps to develop healthy sleep patterns.

The first prototype is now in clinical use. In the new intensive care rooms at the Charité Clinic the medical apparatus has been hidden from view and the level of noise has been reduced. The innovative LED luminous ceiling from Philips adapts to suit the patient's specific wishes : the doctor in charge of the patient's care enters a number of parameters relating to the patient's wellbeing on a tablet PC A program specially designed by ART + COM controls the screen in such a way that the light is tailored to suit the patient's needs and. an appropriate mood is created in the patient room. Amongst other things, live weather updates from the German meteorological office are used to support this process.

Commercial Office Lighting Audit: Top Five Reasons Building Owners and Operators Should Seek a Professional Assessment

Building owners and operators are becoming increasingly aware of the impact led high bay light wholesale can have on energy costs and the way it can contribute to savings. But the best lighting technology for each application must first be identified before maximum savings can be achieved.

To help explain the importance of such an assessment, experts with GE Lighting have identified five reasons why building owners and operators should seek a professional lighting audit to help achieve an ideal office lighting design and maximize energy efficiency.

According to the Building Operating Managers Association, utility expenses have grown 9 cents per square foot during the last 14 years. A lighting audit can compare energy usage rates and explore more efficient alternatives to a property's existing technologies, indoors and out.

Also, in addition to energy savings, rebates on LED lighting help reduce initial costs. While requirements vary based on local programs, many lighting professionals are willing to work closely with building owners to help identify eligibility and discover these additional savings.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency's National Action Plan for Energy Efficiency, energy consumption in buildings accounts for two-thirds of the total electricity demand in the United States. To address and reduce this demand, federal, state and local governments have established codes requiring more energy-efficient practices in both existing buildings and new construction. A professional lighting audit takes into account all applicable regulations.

The Illuminating Engineering Society of North America recommends a 30-50 foot-candle (fc) range for ambient (general) office lighting, yet the average workspace is lit to 60 fc. Over-lighting can mean unnecessary eye strain for occupants and higher energy costs for companies.

The California Lighting Technology Center and the California Energy Commission PIER Program found that utilizing low energy-consumption, buy led high bay lamps localized task lighting as the primary layer of light resulted in a 50-percent savings in office lighting energy usage and user satisfaction-evidencing the extent to which a simple lighting design change can make a significant difference.

Replacing current lamps with long-life energy-efficient lamps can lead to considerable maintenance savings, particularly in areas with difficult-to-access lamps. A professional lighting audit can help identify where installing new fixtures or re-lamping may reduce maintenance costs over time .

Most workspaces today are over-lit. To avoid this, it is best to layer different types of lighting such as ambient and task lighting.

Sustainability is here to stay

Practices aimed at cultivating sustainability are commonly becoming part of the culture of companies. Efficient, well-designed lighting is an important piece of this sustainability picture, and a professional lighting audit can help a company achieve its goals for greater energy efficiency.

The Future of Blue Light Considering Its Health Concerns

It was 1958, when J. Woodland Hasting and Beatrice M. Sweeney wrote the paper entitled "A persistent diurnal rhythm of luminescence in gonyaulax polydra". Paper concluded on how lights of different wavelength have the ability to change flow of a hormone named melatonin and hence affecting human body clock, also known as circadian rhythm.

When we have a look to our eye: buy led high bay lamps are two main sensors in our eye, namely cones and rods which showcase colour and greyness respectively to brain The peak sensitivity of cones came around to be 555nm and that of rods came around to be 507nm. which is towards greenish region of electromagnetic spectrum. Even though with such a higher sensitivity to green light, the blue light was having higher ability to exert powerful effects on eye. Through experiments it was concluded that blue wavelength suppressed melatonin twice as long as compared to green!

Well this source could be from many forms ranging from sun light, arc coming out of arc welding and plasma cutting, molten iron, steel and glass. Other sources being discharge of fluorescent lamps, filament of incandescent lamps and of course LED lamps.

One of the main constituents of eye is retina (as shown in Fig 3) which is bounded by a tissue named retinal pigmented epithelium (RPE). Since melanin being the most common pigment in RPE and its property to strongly absorb blue light, puts retina subject to actinic injury. This photochemical reaction is also known as photo retinitis.

In 1992, Chen a researcher at St. Erik's Eye hospital in Sweden came to conclusion about retinal degeneration with his experiments with rats. He concluded that an important enzyme named cytochrome oxidase, responsible for respiration of retina gets destroyed on the exposure of blue light by inhibiting cellular respiration leading to retinal degeneration.

To make experiments more relevant to human beings, similar experiments were conducted on baboons which have very similar characteristics of eye as that of human beings The results were similar -. Extensive damage in the RPE due to absorption of energy by melanin granules The damage mainly. constituted of macrophagic activity, disrupted cells and plaque formation which is also termed as photochemical lesion.

Illustration of an eye, focusing of two main entities wherein damage can take place due to direct exposure to blue light: ie Retina and Lens. (Image courtesy: Wikimedia.org)
Recent studies by Okuno T et al. Suggested that direct exposure to blue part of light coming from sun, arc welding, plasma cutting and arc discharge lamp with exposure time of 0.6s to 40s suggests damage to retina because of its extremely higher effective radiance.

One way to resolve such damage is to place a yellow lens covering the blue light source. Young people under the age of 20 or very young children who are yet to develop yellowing of their lens are less equipped to protect themselves from direct exposure to blue light .

There are basically three types of white LED's majorly available in market. First being red, green and blue led high bay light for sale together to produce white light. Second UV (ultra violet) LED covered by a particular phosphor giving white light. But the major stake in market as of now is of the third variant - blue LED covered by yellow phosphor to give a white light.

A recent study were conducted by the group of Lilla Knels (2010), where they in vitro experimented blue LEDs with wavelength 411nm and 470nm (near to blue region) with a defined irradiances of 0.6, 1.5 and 4.5 W/m2 on retinal neuronal cells of ocular region.

They observed reduction in metabolism activity and production of mitochondrial superoxide radical's increase. The formation of superoxide creates stress in mitochondria and contributes to its declining functioning. Mitochondria's major role in every cell is to convert glucose to ATP and hence giving energy to the cell.

Lot said about the downside, but blue also have an upside of biological effects. Many studies have gone to work upon the upside of blue light and how it affects tissue.

Daniel Kripke worked on this aspect and believes from his research that bright blue light helps in treating psychological disorders such as premenstrual depression, bulmia (over eating disorder) and anxiety. Moreover researchers at Caser Western Reserve University led by Prof. Patricia Higgins are testing bright blue light to treat patient with mental illness such as dementia (brain disease that cause loss of thinking and reasoning). The results looked promising and showed raised activity levels in daytime and increasing sleep at night time.

Coming back to eye:. In addition to the rod and cone cells present in eye, the researchers in 2001 discovered a new entity named ganglion cell coated with chemical named melanopsin This melanopsin like rods and cones can be activated by light, but only within the boundaries of wavelength between 446nm and 477nm, that is blue light!

Moreover this melanopsin, when activated sends signal to hypothalamus which reduces the level of melatonin and eventually shifting our circadian rhythm and hence our mood.

Also the newborn babies facing jaundice (hyper bili rubinemia) which at higher level may result in damage to brain are treated with blue light therapy (420 - 470 nm) which converts bilirubin so that be excreted through urine and feces as shown in Fig 6.

Also it is agreed that blue light surrounds us day in and day out, inside or outside our house. Whether it might be fatal to living organism crawling on earth is yet to be full proofed, but it does effects our daily life, minutely but as daily dose.

Moreover, the upside of blue light was discussed, how it helps human being to help work out on the mood through a hormone known as melatonin. It helps in treating mental illness and psychological disorders such as dementia and bulimia respectively.

Considering both upside and downside of blue light, it's better for our body to be aware of such effects and till then we have to wait for right time to come, for the researchers to come to a concrete conclusion, wherein a bold decision could be taken to change the whole marketing strategies of technologies surrounding us.
