Strategies Unlimited publishes research on LED module market

Still, LED modules for general lighting represent a significant market today with the report stating 2013 revenue at $ 1.3B (billion). Strategies Unlimited projects that number to grow at a 32.8% rate to $ 7.8B by 2019.
The biggest opportunity indoors is in troffer applications and outdoors in street light applications. Small LED floodlight from E-conolight highlights Florida landscape with 4000K light

Dartmouth University cuts energy use by two-thirds with Terralux lighting upgrade

When Dartmouth initiated a campus-wide project to improve efficiency and make university operations more eco-friendly, one of the main focuses was installing green lighting and upgrading existing fixtures to cut energy use. The Baker-Berry Library was one of the buildings targeted for a lighting upgrade. However, maintenance staff faced a challenge. The ceiling in the library is perforated metal in some areas and solid sheet rock in others so installing new light fixtures would require locating a fixture that would identically match the current openings cut into the ceiling . Design firm PointofView uses LEDs and daylighting in Sydney architectural lighting project

A custom cluster of pendants was designed and suspended over the reception desk to anchor it and give visitors a point of destination.

The downside to such a topology is that all of the LEDs are not switched on for the same amount of time. The different duty cycles can result in uneven light levels from segment to segment, and lower overall efficacy.
The step-drive technique essentially reduces the utilization level of the LEDs in a system, and that would effectively add cost because more LEDs would be required to reach the same light levels of a DC-driven alternative. Campbell points out, however, that the simpler driver more than makes up for the LED cost differential.
At the system level, however, the product designers also had to compensate for the different light levels associated with LEDs in different segments. AC-LED technology has been used in applications such as downlights where the LEDs are grouped closely together and the differences in light levels between individual components are not as important as the total lumen output in the beam. In the linear applications, with individual LEDs spaced apart along the length, inconsistencies could be noticeable.
Color and lumen consistency
